2009 – Santo Daime Churches in Oregon Gain Religious Exemption to Drink Ayahuasca

ayahuasca in oregon

The drinking of ayahuasca in Oregon underwent a change in 2009 for the local Santo Daime church branches. They won the lawsuit they had brought against the government for a religious freedom exemption for the use of their sacrament. The Church of the Holy Light of the Queen of Ashland, Oregon, joined by the Church of the Divine Rose of Portland, Oregon, had brought a law suit against the government, and cited the UDV Supreme Court judgment as a precedent. The decision legalized ayahuasca drinking for the Santo Daime churches in Oregon.
